The symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)

OCD is a mental illness, and as such, everyone will suffer it slightly differently. However, you will generally have negative obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours that you’ll experience in four different stages.

  • Obsession – Experiencing distressing, unwanted and intrusive thoughts, images or urges entering your mind.
  • Anxiety – These obsessions in turn will cause you to feel intense levels of stress and anxiety.
  • Compulsion – Feeling the need to enact repetitive behaviours or mental acts due to the distress and anxiety caused by the obsession.
  • Temporary relief – By acting out this compulsive behaviour, you get a temporary feeling of relief, but soon find your obsessions and anxiety returning.

Treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)

OCD can often be effectively treated with cognitive behavioural therapy, where an experienced and qualified therapist will help you to face your obsessive thoughts in a way where you don’t give in to your compulsions for relief and learn to ignore the anxiety you currently feel.

CBT is considered an effective method of treatment for most people suffering with OCD and the length of your treatment will depend on how severe your OCD is. It can sound incredibly difficult and frightening to break the cycle of OCD, but the team at Catalyst Therapy are here to help you every step of the way.

It’s our goal to help you to overcome your obsessions and compulsions, helping you to concentrate on living a happy and fulfilling life once more. To discuss OCD treatment in Havering, don’t hesitate to contact us on 01708 781 927 or email info@catalysttnt.co.uk today.
